It's not always the most famous creatives who make the best documentary subjects; sometimes it's quite the reverse. Born in Cuba in 1915, artist Carmen Herrera sold her first piece aged 84, and held her first solo exhibition at 89. Her abstract and minimalist art has since brought her international recognition, and this documentary was made to celebrate her 100th birthday in 2015. Well, there's still time, and here's a great example of how it's possible to get recognition for your work late in life. And so quirky docu-series The Toys that Made Us, which looks at the creation of some of the world's most iconic toy franchises, is a great way to think about design in a way that's both nostalgic and familiar, and provides new insights into what goes into crafting a classic.

Work was based on a feasibility study conducted by Carl Vinson Institute of Government. All of artists featured across the book are unique, and so are their creative processes. Those Facebook posts caught the attention of Young’s life and producing partner, Judith Mizrachy (Hamilton’s former New York Observer colleague) and became the impetus for Uncropped, a time capsule hardwired with a sense of melancholy with every page flip through the archive. In just under an hour and a half, this fascinating portrait explores the eccentric couple’s lasting influence on the world of design, as well as the sexism that existed in the industry at the time—examining why, for instance, Charles’s name alone appeared on every project.

But in this series of short movies, he takes viewers on a tour of the glorious architecture of Duck End—the restored 17th-century manor house in Oxfordshire, England, which he shares with his wife Catherine.
Netflix has become the go-to-source for all things entertainment related — regardless if you're a viewer who prefers Michael Bay-style spectacles — or more low-key affairs which explore the human condition. If you happen to fall into the latter category, the art documentaries on Netflix are an excellent escape. Not only do they tune out the events of the work day, but they can also aid in one's own attempt to get in touch with their creativity. The fact that you probably don't know anything about Dorfman makes the story of her life all the more compelling, and Morris brings it all together in a way that keeps up the pace and remains captivating throughout its one hour 16 minute length.

The film delves into the intergenerational repercussions of addiction through the compelling narrative of Ashley Elizabeth Ellis (Feb. 10, Nov. 6, 2021). Chronicling the profound impact of substance abuse on her family, the film offers an intimate exploration of the bonds that unite them amidst the constant threat of division posed by addiction.
The genesis of the film was a chance meeting between Bumgarner and Ellis’ mother in 2018 and getting to know Ellis, who was open with Bumgarner and Seiler about her struggles with substance use. The film traces the deep bond between family members and their remarkable strength as they faced the turbulence and despair of addiction. “Picture Proof” aims to honor Ellis’ life and connect with others who can relate to struggles with addiction, recovery and loss. "They all have a compulsion, an obsession to make something. It gets into their system and they can't let go of it," Moss said, explaining that the vision or the final product is secondary to the process.
